    Babbling Brooke,

I'm actually thrilled to here your horse stories. As a teenager I spent all of my spare time riding my horse. It was definitely a passionate love affair. I was a particularly tall teenager, and I was able to really fit into the horse community. My friends parents had a lot more money than mine and had private trainers for their horses and themselves. However, I paid attention to how my friends schooled their horses and I followed through with how I worked with my horse. Eventually, after having several horses I was able to purchase an older horse owned by a trainer and I ended up winning awards riding in the local horse shows.

The downside to this amazing joy in my life, is that I ended up being thrown off a couple of times and ended up unconscious both times. I was in the hospital each time with a mild concussion. Once when I was about 15 years old and the second time I was in my late 20's. I have some side effects with attention and how I learn.

I have to say, if I had a choice to do it differently, I still wouldn't have given up those horses. Very special creatures with both their wild and spiritual nature.

I look forward to hearing more about your horse encounters.

OMG! Thanks, Stan! And did you see the synchronicity that today's Google Doodle is a very similar running horse?

Barbara – That’s so sweet how you studied the other students to pick up horsewomanship!

I look forward to hearing more about *your* horse encounters, too!

Dolphins call each other by name

thanks to goodnewsnetwork for the find

Bottlenose dolphins call out the specific names of loved ones when they become separated, a study finds.

Other than humans, the dolphins are the only animals known to do this, according to the study, published in the latest Proceedings of the Royal Society B. The big difference with bottlenose dolphins is that these communications consist of whistles, not words.

Earlier research found that bottlenose dolphins name themselves, with dolphins having a “signature whistle” that encodes other information. It would be somewhat like a human shouting, “Hey everybody! I’m an adult healthy male named George, and I mean you no harm!”

The new finding is that bottlenose dolphins also say the names of certain other dolphins.

“Animals produced copies when they were separated from a close associate and this supports our belief that dolphins copy another animal’s signature whistle when they want to reunite with that specific individual,” lead author Stephanie King of the University of St. Andrews Sea Mammal Research Unit told Discovery News.
    ….

“Dolphin whistles can be detected up to 20 km away (12.4 miles) depending on water depth and whistle frequency.”

The researchers said dolphins copy the signature whistles of loved ones, such as a mother or close male buddy, when the two are apart. These “names” were never emitted in aggressive or antagonistic situations and were only directed toward loved ones.

The whistle copies also always had a unique variation to them, so the dolphins weren’t merely mimicking each other. The dolphins instead were adding their own “tone of voice” via unique whistling.

“Interestingly, captive dolphins can learn new signals and refer to objects and it may be that dolphins can use signature whistle copies to label or refer to an individual, which is a skill inherent in human language,” King said.

Fascinating. Dolphins are said to be highly intelligent. In fact, I understand they work really with people with autism, something about communication. We haven't tried it but I've often wondered what might happen.

Junior -- for your delectation --

Dolphins are traditionally seen as psychic, closely bonded with humanity, profoundly wise and intelligent, and having some special mission that affects us all. There are many anecdotes of dolphins rescuing humans, healing humans, assisting human births.

The AquaThought Foundation http://www.aquathought.com/ “is a privately funded research organization dedicated to the exploration of human-dolphin interaction. Since 1989, AquaThought has studied the neurological impact of close contact with dolphins on human subjects and the related therapeutic phenomena.”

“According to their research, the human subject's dominate [dominant?] brain frequency drops significantly after dolphin interaction. Also observable is a period of hemispheric synchronization (the brainwaves emitted from both the left and right hemispheres of the brain are in phase and of similar frequency). Also, in many instances the background EEG became more evenly distributed within the spectrum. It is believed that this phenomenon may have some sort of therapeutic effect on an individual’s emotional, or physical health” (Rebecca Sato & Josh Hill, dailygalaxy.com, 12 Jun 09).

Sheila – I’m going to merge the two dolphin threads so we can have all the wonderful dolphin stuff in one place, OK?

Sheila – Sure. Hopefully, other people will post more wonderful dolphin stuff!

I loved this book. You’ll learn a lot about dolphins –

The Aquarians: 2012 – a new era begins

    by Eric Rankin, 2009

According to the ancient Mayan calendar, time as we know it will stop on December 21st, 2012. But what does this actually mean? Rebecca Larson, senior dolphin behaviorist at SeaWorld, San Diego, has a theory. She believes that the cooperative way dolphins live is the very reason they have thrived on earth for millions of years. What's more, she sees the end of the Mayan calendar as a moment when humans may truly begin to integrate these same peaceful behaviors.

Something similar to the research findings created in this fictional novel in 2009, seem to have come to pass in 2011 –

Using a CymaScope to make sound visible, British research team member John Stuart Reid was able to see the sono-pictorial images that the dolphins created and transmitted to each other. Reid explains below how the images form:

"When a dolphin scans an object with its high frequency sound beam, emitted in the form of short clicks, each click captures a still image, similar to a camera taking photographs. Each dolphin click is a pulse of pure sound that becomes modulated by the shape of the object. In other words, the pulse of reflected sound contains a semi-holographic representation of the object."
