Ok, when I read this, I gasped. One in seven! That has to be the highest number ever. And, even more shockingly - "Twice as many women were prescribed the drugs than man", which means that among women it's even worse than "one in seven". What side-effects will this amount to in the coming years, and what gigantic tolerance withdrawal the entire nations are in for...

One in seven Scots are now taking antidepressants following a four-fold increase in prescriptions in the last two decades, official figures suggest.

Prescriptions for anti-psychotic drugs have almost doubled in the same period, according to figures released by the NHS Information Services Division (ISD).

Meanwhile, the use of drugs to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, which is most commonly diagnosed in children, is now 20 times higher than it was 15 years ago.

Antidepressant prescriptions have risen steadily from 1.26m drugs dispensed in 1993/94 to just over five million in 2011/12.

Twice as many women were prescribed the drugs than man, with 483,431 compared to 234,899 in 2011/12, totalling almost 14% of the Scottish population.

Prescriptions have increased across all age groups, with 24 children aged 0-4 prescribed antidepressant drugs last year, compared to ten in 2009/10.
