    Depression and Paxil in Japan

Always wanted to learned more about depression and Paxil in Japan after reading Crazy Like Us: The Globalization of American Psyche, Ethan Watters a few yrs back. Especially, chapter 4 regarding The Mega-Marketing of Depression in Japan. Have also bought another book (Depression in Japan: Psychiatric Cures for a Society in Distress, Junko Kitanaka) on the subject, but never read because its mainly a text book. Which I 1st found out about the book and the author via that 1st book.

I have not read the book but I thought already some time abo about the consequences of the marekting of Paxil in countries like Japan and China, after reading an article that GSK has targeted these countries as new areas for the marketing of their "wonder drug" from hell.
These countries do not have the (now rapidly declining) social security system of the Netherlands which until now saved my life so I wonder what happens to the people who get into protracted WD and are not able to functon for years.
So I think that a new wave of suicide will emerge, which GSK will probably take as an argument that mre people needs to be put on their drug...
It is such a horrible crime that it almost looks like an evil fairy tale.
Recovering from the ravages of withdrawal after 5 years on Paxil/Seroxat, originally prescribed for stress and, looking backward, PTSS.
Though it is hardly possible to get something positive from the utter hell of repeated c/t's and protracted w/d, all of this unnecessary, I still believe in the possiblity to emerge from this as a healed, wiser human being.

Jessica -- That's very interesting about the marketing of American psychiatry in Japan. It is unfortunately the case that the American Psychiatric Association's DSM-IV has been adopted as a standard by many countries. Cultural imperialism.

Claudius -- Yeah, scary to think about. And these drugs are being marketed all over the world in places that have less of a social safety net.

"An initiation into shamanic healing means a devaluation of all values, an overturning of the profane world, a peeling away of inveterate handed-down notions of the world, liberation from everything preconceived. For that reason, shamanism is closely connected with suffering. One must suffer the disintegration of one's own system of thought in order to perceive a new world in the higher space."
